The Great Gilly Hopkins is a book written by Katherine Paterson. It is set in Maryland in the 1960's. Galadriel Hopkins is the troubled main character. She is a young foster child who has built a wall of anger around her emotions. She is a girl who is reluctant to love and be loved due to the neglect of her mother.

Attitude

Gilly's attitude gets in the way of her success. She is mean, nasty, and belligerent.

Gilly's anger causes her to make bad decisions. Like Bluebeard's wife, she is forced to face the consequences of her thoughtless actions.

Maime Trotter

Maime Trotter breaks into Gilly's frozen emotions by offering her unconditional love, something that Gilly always dreamed of having from her mother. No matter what Gilly does, Maime loves her. Gilly's reluctance to love begins to dissolve.
